What Hat to Wear to Church, Derby, Weddings & Evening Events

Colour, material, brim and feather choices for the events where the hat is the first thing anyone notices.

Church

Sunday rewards colour and confidence. Wool felt in a strong colourway or a clean cream reads celebratory without shouting. A short or medium feather is the sweet spot: an accent, not a headline.

Derby and daytime outdoor events

Heat, sun and photographs all point the same way: straw. Light, breathable, and it plays well with pastel and mid-tone tailoring. This is the one occasion where a longer statement feather is entirely at home.

Weddings

Take the temperature of the dress code first. Formal and indoors — felt in a deep neutral, minimal feather. Outdoor and warm — straw. The rule that never fails: never outdress the couple, and never match the wedding party exactly.

Evening and black tie

Midnight black felt, black tailoring, one metallic detail. No feather, or barely one. At night, restraint reads as expensive — and the owl beneath the brim does the talking when the hat comes off.

Business

Charcoal or black felt, clean crown, no feather. It should look like part of the suit rather than a flourish on top of it.

Etiquette worth keeping

Set the hat about a finger's width above the eyebrows. Remove it at the dinner table and in places of worship where that is the custom. Handle it by the brim edge. Knowing when not to wear it is part of wearing it well.

Common questions

Answered by the house.

Can I wear a fedora to a wedding?
Yes, matched to the dress code: felt in a deep neutral for formal indoor weddings, straw for warm outdoor ceremonies.
Should I take my hat off indoors?
Remove it at the dinner table and in places of worship where that is the custom. Otherwise, wearing it indoors is a matter of the room you are in.
What feather length is most formal?
No feather is the most formal. A short feather suits daily tailoring; a longer statement feather is for occasions where you intend to be seen.
