How to Wear a Fedora

Start with proportion

Brim width should relate to your shoulders and the width of your face. A 4 inch straight brim — the house standard — reads confident on most faces and photographs beautifully. Broader faces carry wider brims; narrower faces are flattered by a slightly shorter one.

Crown height does the opposite job: it adds vertical line. Pair a taller crown with a leaner silhouette, and keep it in check when you are already wearing volume.

With a tailored suit

Match the formality, not the colour. A charcoal or midnight black felt is the safest anchor for business and evening tailoring. When your suit is the statement — a colour suit, a bold pattern — let the hat sit in the same family a shade deeper, or take the opposite route entirely and go cream.

With an Oxford shirt

A crisp Oxford, sleeves rolled once, a wool fedora tipped slightly back. This is the easiest look in the wardrobe and the one most people underuse. Keep the shirt clean and pressed; the hat supplies the personality.

With coats and elevated casual

Topcoats and overcoats were designed with hats in mind. Camel and cognac coats sit beautifully under brown and burgundy felt. For elevated casual — knitwear, trousers, a clean boot — treat the hat as the sharpest object in the outfit and let everything else stay quiet.

Evening

Black felt, black tailoring, a single metallic detail. At night, restraint reads as expensive. Let the feather and the underbrim do the talking when you take the hat off.

Wearing it, not just putting it on

Set the hat about a finger's width above your eyebrows, level or a fraction tipped. Handle it by the brim edge, not the crown. And when you sit down at dinner, take it off — knowing when not to wear it is part of wearing it well.
